Remember...

Ever since the break of my marriage, I have taken a lot of trips home.
What used to be a journey  that was taken every 2-3 years became an almost yearly occurrence. Weddings, special occasions, seasonal holidays...and sometimes, because I just NEED to be home to be amongst my family and friends.

Because it takes a lot to pretend that life here is exactly all that I have envisioned -- actually, I don't think I have ever succeeded in convincing myself ever of that. But I persevere, because I tell myself I am doing it for my kid, because the opportunities are better here, because the standard of living is better here.
All of which are probably true to some degree, but the main reason is because I am a coward.

I don't like change.
I don't like uprooting what is comfortable.
I don't like making too much of a splash.
Because what if the end result ends up taking me to a situation that is worse that what I started with?
Best not to risk it.

And so I trudge on in life in a cloud of mediocrity, just....existing and taking it day by day.  But that takes its toll and eventually, I am in desperate need to be enveloped in the warmth and humidity of my country.
And that could not be more true during the early years of the break.
I went back twice that first year and I took a lot of videos during one of those particular trips. I wanted to ensure that there was something that Isabel can go through when she was older because chances are, she will have no recollection of those events. And I took it for myself too, because I needed it as something to hang on to: a reminder of my family to help me pull through when times got unbearably hard when I returned to the States and back to the shambles that was my life at that point in time.

I don't know if it ever occurred to me then that these videos will serve as a memory of my family members for when they've passed on - as a way to remember the sound of their voice and laughter, to remember them when they were so alive and vibrant, to see them interacting and just...to remember.

At least, not so soon.

My aunts are very dear to me.
They were my "companions" during my formative years. I "hung out" with them, I learned from them, I laughed and joked with them -- in short, they played a big part in raising and shaping me.

And this past Friday, one of my precious relatives passed away.
The youngest of my mother's siblings, she was one of the most welcoming, most gracious person I know. If someone was meeting my family for the first time and they needed to be put at ease, she was the one who would naturally step up to that plate and she will do it like the pro that she is.

She took me on vacations with her family because my mom doesn't really do vacations, she always gave the best presents because being "younger" gave her an edge of knowing what moody, ungrateful teens might prefer, she was the "cool, put-together" relative that won't embarrass you.

 photo PICT0140.jpg

She counseled me, comforted me  and guided me when I was going through difficult times as a stubborn pig-headed teen. She cheered for me, encouraged me, and was there for me when things were falling down around me. She prayed for me and have always tried to gently encourage me to the way of the Lord.
In simple words, she loved me.

I am so grateful and so blessed to have known that love. And I am so incredibly thankful that my child has known that love as well, even though she may not remember much of it. The videos, however meager of a substitute they are, will serve as a reminder.

Yee Chai -- I know that you are in a better place, that you are whole and beautiful and healthy once more, that you are safe and happy and reunited with loved ones previously lost. I pray that I will find the strength to be a better person than who I am now. A braver person, a more loving and kind person,  in hopes that I will make you somewhat proud.

I love you.

Birthday, Part One

It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that to kick my butt into high gear to finally tackle the half finished projects in the house, there needs to be a very definite deadline to get things done.

So I threw a party.

 photo IMG_4917_zps7c73d1ba.jpg

Isabel is turning five this year.
(HOW DID THAT HAPPEN??)

And since the big party will be in Malaysia this year, I had a small one earlier at the house.

 photo IMG_4918_zpsa54563ef.jpg

And invited some of her closest friends from her daycare whom she has not seen much of since starting kindergarten this fall

 photo IMG_4957_zpsbdee6d52.jpg

It makes the heart warm to see all of them together again
And something to note, almost 5 years olds are VERY noisy when they reunite.
Especially when they are all girls.

 photo 6041c73c-6bd9-4f96-bca4-91f86360ec43_zps127d12ff.jpg

All in all, it was fun.

The guest list was small enough for me to have time to pay attention to the presentation details and DIY crafts and decorations that I have seen on the web and thought, "Oh, that is such a fantastic idea!"

 photo IMG_4952_zps9d7b5148.jpg

The study/library worked exactly as I envisioned it when I was planned the room -- it was perfect for hosting a sit-down meal.

2014 resolution: If my friends and family lived close by, I am sure that it would be a frequent occurrence, but I need to break out of my comfort zone and invite people over for meals (although I may want to leave the actual food cooking to the experts!)

Lets Go Picking!

Welcome to my little square foot garden!
(LOVE my little harvest basket)

 photo IMG_4696_zps26bd24ba.jpg

Tomatoes are doing well -- I was under the impression that tomatoes should be in abundance in the middle of summer...If that is the case, my tomatoes (and eggplants, for that matter) are late bloomers

My Japanese (Ichiban) eggplants are doing well -- it has yielded quite an abundance (to me, at least) of fruit.
Whereas the regular eggplant has had 2...one of which is still in the mid-stages of growing.

 photo IMG_4700_zps15f2195d.jpg

It currently has about 4-5 that should be ready for picking in the next week of so, with some tiny little babies still growing (looks like a little Christmas light bulb!)

 photo IMG_4699_zps4f90408b.jpg

A regular harvest for me

 photo IMG_4702_zps0be19900.jpg

Sometimes in the span of a few days, a week, or longer than that -- it really depends on the plants - I do not treat it with fertilizer. I don't do much other than water them occasionally, to be honest.

Seems pitiful in comparison to serious gardeners. But it is sufficient for this household of 1 1/2.

Even with these meager pickings, I am at a loss of what to do with them sometimes, as there are only so many eggplant/tomato/basil cravings I get.

For today, it shall be a simple omelet type mash

 photo IMG_4710_zps5f9cff65.jpg

In other parts of the garden, my lavender in the side garden is going into second bloom...love my lavender!

And a random picture of Isabel as she went to school this morning --

She looks like a skater girl/tomboy.
Rarely does she ever dress like this - it's the baggy jeans that gives that impression. Again, another outfit courtesy of her dad.

They aren't really my style, but whatever floats her boat. She is still cute as a button
(with a little hooligan hiding within that cuteness)

5 Random, Mundane Things #1

1) Obsessed with this song:

The church I have been attending have had a turnover of their choir/singing group (with a fantastic new lead/guitar player) and they have been introducing a lot more contemporary songs -- this one was played with a strong drum beat (like the march of an army) and is sing-at-the-top-of-your-voice FANTASTIC

 2) Still awed by the fact that I am actually GROWING food. It is a humbling and amazing experience. And quite fool proof as I have basically been ignoring my plot, except for random watering and weeding.

3) Books I recently finished and loved

The One and Only Ivan
Tears fell, my heart ached, I wondered about the cruelty of humans and I don't want to go to a circus ever, EVER again

It is a children's book, which I have a soft spot for.

Edenbrooke
A historical romance, my favorite kind. I read a lot of these, but this is definitely one of my favorites, along with She Walks in Beauty  by Siri Mitchell.

I borrow my books from the library because if I bought all the books I wanted to read, I would go broke and will live in a cardboard box under a bridge.

But this is one I will be purchasing for my own library
(that sends a thrill down my spine---"my OWN library")

Some of my old friends and I are trying to form a book club where we will read and talk about books. We all live on different continents, with probably very different tastes in reading materials (I prefer to read those with a hopeful air, happy endings and basically something, that at the end of it, will make me have a new perspective on life and hope for the future. One of my friends prefer sad books -- She loves Wuthering Heights..I wanted to smack Heathcliff, and shake Catherine)...so it shall be interesting.

I am excited.

4) Since I love historical fiction, it is probably a given that I like period movies and shows as well. I don't watch much TV, but PBS has made available fantastic shows

Call the Midwife

Set after the war in the 1950s, it follows the life of midwives in London's East End.
The second season is still up for viewing here

Downton Abbey

Also made available via PBS, it is about lives of aristocrats (the Earl of Grantham and his family) in the post-Edwardian era

I have recently signed up for a trial of Amazon Prime and to my delight, they have made this series available for free (All THREE seasons)

Whereas Netflix has taken down Season 1 (the one and only season offered on streaming) from their online selections.

Boo Netflix.

5) Trying to be super fantastic mom and make inspired lunches for Isabel as she starts her new school. Japanese containers rock.

Sunflower butter sandwich, hard-boiled egg, fish nuggets and a tomato FROM MY GARDEN

And I don't know how American kids can survive (and actually LIKE) having some form of a sandwich day after day after day for their lunch.

And So, A Chapter Ends...

Summer is over.
Tomorrow is the beginning of a new school year.

This time of year has never affected me before. but this year... TOMORROW (!!!), Isabel will embark on the next chapter of her life as a kindergartener.

She has grown so much

She is starting to go on monkey bars by herself now.

She is a bit of a monkey herself too

She can do a cartwheel! We practiced for a whole week in the evenings.
Yes.
We.

And she is still a pretty dismal singer

Her reaction after watching herself on the video: "I didn't sing like that! That wasn't me!!"

Uh-huh...

I am sad that she will be leaving all the kids that she has grown up with since she was 2 months old.

Her best friend at school is feeling quite sad too...

And the boy Isabel intends to marry gave her a stuffed puppy to remember him by
(sweetest thing, EVER. My heart melts. I think I am more affected by this gesture than she is)

We went to each of the rooms at her daycare today to give out little tokens of appreciation to the teachers and caretakers who have looked after her and nurtured her and kissed away her boo-boos when I was unable to because I had to work.

These people have been with her almost as long as I have, and I don't know how they do this, year after year of saying goodbye to kids who will most definitely not remember them or remember all that they did for them.

Heart-wrenching.

It has been 4 and a half years of joy and worry, contentment and  frustration, guilt of feeling like I can never do enough and pride that she has turned out the way she did (Though there are more that some parts of her personality that just makes me want to throw up my hands and give up)

And the journey has barely even started.

Momma loves you, my not-so-baby girl.

Joy

 photo IMG_4104.jpg

I had a very nice surprise waiting for me in my mailbox this weekend.
(Well...technically, it was waiting in the post office. And has been so for the past two weeks. Hadn't had a chance to pop into the post office until now)

Thank you very, very much, dear cousin!

I'm afraid that I almost started weeping when I flipped it open, and had to walk away to compose myself before continuing --

This is my favorite picture in the calendar...

Happy Chinese New Year

A wish for us to you...

This is what's happening on my side of the world on this holiday

A far cry from the heat that usually accompanies CNY celebrations back home

 photo IMAG1562.jpg

Our "reunion" dinner --

  photo IMAG1577.jpg

I remember having rice and chinese sausages (along with other dishes) on the morning of the first day of Chinese New Year at my grandmother's house with all of my mother's siblings and their families prior to other extended family members arriving for their CNY visits. Then it is pretty much house-hopping for the rest of the week or so.

Our dinner for tonight -- an odd one to be sure, to celebrate, but it's a lot better than instant noodles, yah? (although I do love my indomie). My second attempt at a roast chicken, and my first attempt at gravy....yumm..the gravy.....

 photo IMAG1586.jpg

Isabel's first experience of eating a chicken off the bone

 photo IMAG1588.jpg

Still figuring out how it works...

 photo IMAG1597.jpg

Yummy, she says!

Still wish we were back though.
Perhaps next year.

Why It Is Difficult

I am fortunate enough to be able to work from the comfort of my home at least once a week.
However, there are times where it gets trying...

Kid 1:

 photo IMG_20130116_161859.jpg

"Kid" 2:

Melly the dog starts out innocently enough by lounging around on the floor next to me...
 photo IMG_20130116_142259.jpg
Then she starts to feel forsaken and pokes her nose up to get attention...

 photo IMAG1438.jpg

And inevitably, to ensure that I am aware of her existance....she will try to hop onto my chair. And will proceed to lay there until I cramp up and push her down again.

 This whole household is mad.
